Student Experience
Hands-on learning, real-world justice connections and a supportive community – discover what makes the Department of Criminal Justice at UofL exceptional.
Criminal Justice Student Life
Criminal Justice students benefit from a rich mix of academic and professional opportunities. They engage in leadership through Alpha Phi Sigma and Lambda Alpha Epsilon, participate in monthly Lunch and Learn conversations and award-winning National Criminal Justice Month programming and connect with local and national professionals through internships and career-focused events — gaining valuable hands-on experience while building leadership, critical thinking and professional communication skills. A dedicated student lounge encourages collaboration and connection among classmates from diverse backgrounds and career goals. Faculty mentorship ties it all together: expert scholars and accomplished practitioners invest personally in students' growth and a close-knit program community ensures guidance and a clear pathway from classroom learning to meaningful careers in criminal justice.
Beyond the Classroom
At UofL's Department of Criminal Justice, learning extends well beyond the lecture hall. From Welcome Week each August to graduation receptions that celebrate student achievement, the department fosters a strong sense of community throughout the year. Every March, National Criminal Justice Month brings together guest speakers from local, state and federal agencies to give students real-world insight into the field. And throughout the academic year, the monthly Lunch and Learn series connects students directly with practitioners and experts — past guests have included representatives from the FBI, U.S. Secret Service, victim advocacy organizations and the courts — building the professional networks that launch careers.
I was inspired to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice because I want to help others in any way possible and work to bring justice to those who need it. I also want to be part of the fight against racial inequalities within the criminal justice system. My goal is to make a difference both for individuals and for communities as a whole.
