Why our Graduate Program

Graduate study in anthropology at UofL is built around a simple idea: understanding humanity takes every lens we have. The MA integrates biological anthropology, archaeology and cultural anthropology, with collaboration across sociology, history, public health and social work – so your research question, not a single subfield, drives your path.

Faculty Mentorship

You’ll work closely with faculty who are active researchers – excavating and analyzing at the Center for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage (CACHe), studying human population genetics in the MAPS lab and running community-engaged projects across Louisville and abroad. Mentorship happens in the lab and the field, not just the seminar room.

Thesis & Culminating Experience

Choose the thesis track to drive an original research project from question to defense, or the experiential (non-thesis) track to apply anthropological methods in practice. Either way, you’ll finish with work that shows what you can do.
