History & Mission
The mission of the Department of Classical and Modern Languages is to prepare students for the global economy, a multicultural community and a changing workplace. We do this through an interdisciplinary approach to language, culture and linguistics that emphasizes practical language skills, cultural knowledge and critical thinking. Our programs, scholarships, campus activities and community engagement support students in applying these skills in both academic and non-academic careers.
To fulfill this mission, we offer Kentucky's most comprehensive language and cultural studies programs. With over 3,000 students taking our courses annually and more than 300 majors and minors, we serve a broad and diverse student body across nine languages and cultural disciplines.
Our 25 full-time faculty are at the heart of our program. They excel in teaching and research, earning recognition including Fulbright Fellowships and the President's Distinguished Teaching Award. Many serve on local non-profit boards, actively contributing to Louisville's cultural communities.
