Where language becomes your bridge to the world. Master communication across cultures and unlock global opportunities that transform communities and create lasting connections.

What is The Department of Classical and Modern Languages?

At the Department of Classical and Modern Languages, we believe that language is more than words — it’s a bridge to new ideas, cultures and opportunities. Our programs allow you to explore more than eight languages, dive into cultural studies and engage in translation, all while building critical-thinking skills and global literacy. Whether you’re a degree-seeking student or fulfilling language requirements, you’ll find a vibrant community of learners passionate about connecting with the world.

Our faculty bring curiosity, expertise and a love of teaching into every classroom. They collaborate across disciplines and with the broader community, guiding students toward meaningful experiences both on campus and abroad. Through scholarships, internships and study abroad programs in places like Austria, Japan, China, France, Panama and Spain, students gain hands-on experience that brings the world into the classroom — and the classroom into the world.

Language Placement Required: Students with high school French or Spanish must take the WebCAPE placement exam before registering for classes. German students are also eligible. Take the WebCAPE Test.

Additional Language Placement for ASL, Arabic, Chinese, Classics (Latin) and Japanese can be done via our department. For more information contact: language@louisville.edu
