History & Mission

Established in 1976, the Department of Communication has a long and evolving history of preparing students to communicate effectively in professional, academic and public life. Rooted in foundational traditions of public speaking and interpersonal communication, the department has grown alongside the discipline itself – into media studies, strategic and organizational communication, digital and visual media, health communication and emerging technologies like AI.

The mission has stayed constant: educate students to become confident professionals with authentic and persuasive voices, grounded in theory, research and practice. Through rigorous, experiential, person-centered learning, students develop skills across oral, written, visual and digital communication – and come to understand both the power of communication and their place within it.

Today the department is recognized for applied learning, creative expression, research engagement and community connection. Guided by UofL's Cardinal Principles, it fosters a supportive environment where students join meaningful conversations and graduate prepared to lead, collaborate and contribute across careers.
