Student Experience
Interactive classes, a newsroom, a speech center and a passport – discover what makes Communication at UofL a community.
Communication Student Life
Communication at UofL is collaborative by design. Classes are interactive and hands-on – discussion, teamwork, presentations and applied projects that connect theory to real-world practice – and faculty are approachable and invested, creating a culture where students are known, mentored and challenged to grow. The department's calendar runs all year: Courtyard COMMversations and the Raise Some “L” fundraiser each fall, the Annual Showcase and Internship Fair in February, the Speak Up competitions each December and April, and study abroad in Panama every May. Add global service-learning through ISLP, and you graduate with confidence, skills and a community of emerging communication professionals.
Beyond the Classroom
Communication is a contact sport – here's how students plug in:
- Young Communication Professionals (YCP) – A student-led organization for building professional skills, networking with industry professionals and exploring career paths through events and workshops.
- NABJ Student Chapter – The National Association of Black Journalists chapter offers professional development, mentorship, leadership and advocacy in journalism and media representation.
- The Louisville Cardinal – UofL's independent student newspaper: hands-on journalism, media production, editing and leadership from a professional-style newsroom.
- Speaker Center Speech Mentors – Coach your peers' public speaking while sharpening your own communication and coaching skills.
- Communication Ambassadors – Represent the department, support recruitment and build professional advocacy skills.
- Speak Up Speech Competition – The annual showcase for excellence in public speaking, with real presentation experience and feedback.
- Applied Research with Faculty – Collaborate on research design, analysis, professional writing and conference presentation.
- Film Production – Hands-on production through coursework, campus projects and Louisville's growing film scene.
