Student Life

Life in this department moves between the classroom, the Helton Center GIS lab and the field. One week you’re modeling land cover from satellite imagery; the next you’re coring trees for a climate record or working a severe-weather forecast. The community is close-knit by design – and events like our annual Speed Networking session put you one-on-one with faculty and staff to trade advice, research leads and opportunities. Between classes, students gather through the Geography Club and the American Meteorological Society student chapter, and the seminar series brings outside scientists to Lutz Hall throughout the year. It adds up to a department that’s easy to find your footing in – and hard to stay anonymous in.

Beyond the Classroom

Geographic & Environmental Sciences students can enhance their student experience by joining any number of our student-run organizations, like the Geography Club or UofL's chapter of the American Meteorological Society.

Study Abroad

See geography where it’s lived. In our signature Peru program – a service-learning collaboration with the J.B. Speed School of Engineering – students spend about three weeks in the Andes doing hands-on geographic fieldwork, geospatial work and applied problem-solving in partnership with an Indigenous Andean community, alongside the Andean Alliance for Sustainable Development and Campesina Forestal. You’ll contribute to locally led projects that align with community priorities – and come home with technical experience, cultural perspective and a deeper understanding of ethical global engagement.
