PAS Student Life

Student life in Pan-African Studies is grounded in community, conversation and a shared commitment to understanding the histories, cultures and experiences of Black people across the African diaspora. Here you’re encouraged to ask difficult questions, connect what you learn in the classroom to the world around you and develop your own voice as a scholar and engaged citizen. Because PAS is a close-knit department, you’ll build relationships with faculty and with one another across courses, majors, minors and class years – in a place where your questions matter, your experiences are taken seriously and you can see yourself as part of the ongoing work of Black Studies.

Academic Opportunities

Put Black Studies into practice – through a required internship, study abroad and a community built around you.

Beyond the Classroom

Outside the classroom, PAS students gather for events, conversations and celebrations that connect them with the broader Black campus and Louisville communities. Department traditions and programs – from student-centered gatherings and cultural events to collaborations with student organizations and community partners – create chances to learn from one another and build relationships beyond coursework. The department is also developing new spaces and programs where students can study, gather, create and experience Pan-African Studies as a community, not just a major.

“I am incredibly grateful for the foundation the Pan-African Studies program gave me. It has shaped how I think, write, and engage with the law…”
