History & Mission
Founded in 1930, the Department of Philosophy at the University of Louisville has grown from a one-person program into the thriving department it is today – one that continues to build on decades of commitment to rigorous philosophical inquiry, dedicated teaching and engaged scholarship. What began as a handful of courses for a small community of students has become a department that carries forward its founding conviction: philosophy is not a luxury of education but one of its most essential components.
The department embodies the University of Louisville’s mission of excellence in research, teaching and community engagement. Our faculty are active in the global academic community – conducting research, publishing and presenting their work to scholars, professionals and the broader public. We model and nurture philosophical inquiry and its associated skills: critically examining our beliefs and engaging in constructive, collaborative dialogue characterized by a shared search for truth through evidence and argument. In both our students and the wider community, we foster the ability to evaluate beliefs and gain deeper insight into our world – empowering people to lead more purposeful, reflective lives and to contribute to their communities, their societies and the world.
Who We Serve
We serve a wide range of students: majors pursuing the BA in Philosophy as a foundation for law school, graduate study or careers in business, public service and the humanities; pre-med students drawn to our Bioethics tracks; and a large population of minors – in Philosophy; Philosophy, Politics and Economics; Legal Studies; and Disability Studies – many from other departments seeking sharper critical thinking and ethical reasoning. Our Certificate in Ethics serves students in every major who want focused training in applied ethics without a full degree. At the graduate level, the MA in Applied Philosophy (Health Care Ethics or Practical and Applied Philosophy tracks) prepares students for applied careers in healthcare ethics, policy and professional ethics, and the Graduate Certificate in Health Care Ethics serves working professionals and community members seeking credentials.

They consistently rank among the top performers on the LSAT, GRE and GMAT, and they have the highest salary growth rate of any undergraduate major – more than doubling their earnings from starting to mid-career. The skills you build here – critical thinking, argumentation, ethical reasoning and clear writing – transfer to virtually any field.
Not at all. Most of our students arrive with curiosity and an open mind, not a background in the subject. Our introductory courses are designed to meet you where you are.
Absolutely – many of our students do. Philosophy pairs especially well with pre-law, pre-med, biology, political science, psychology and business, and the analytical skills you develop strengthen almost any other area of study.
Yes. The Master of Arts in Applied Philosophy prepares students for careers in ethics-intensive fields through two tracks: Health Care Ethics, for students headed into medicine, nursing and allied health, and Practical and Applied Philosophy, for those applying philosophical reasoning to real-world problems in business, law and public policy. We also offer a Graduate Certificate in Health Care Ethics.
Plenty. The Philosophy Club meets regularly for informal discussion – plus film screenings and reading groups – and is open to all students. High-achieving majors can join Phi Sigma Tau, our chapter of the national philosophy honor society. The flagship is the Steven Humphrey Undergraduate Philosophy Colloquium, an annual international conference hosted here in Louisville where undergraduates from across North America present their research. Students also pursue independent research, honors theses and internships with community partners.
One of the best. Philosophy majors are among the highest scorers on the LSAT and GRE and have strong medical school acceptance rates, and our coursework in logic, ethics and argumentation maps directly onto the skills law and medical schools look for. A 2025 study in the Journal of the American Philosophical Association found that studying philosophy itself – not just the kind of student it attracts – produces measurable gains in critical reasoning.
A lot. Faculty mentor students well beyond the classroom, and advising toward graduate and professional school is central to that commitment – they are experienced letter-writers invested in helping you present yourself compellingly. Financial support is available too: the Thomas S. Maloney Scholarship assists philosophy majors with demonstrated financial need, and the Richard Campbell Smith and Richard L. Barber Awards recognize graduating seniors for department engagement and academic excellence.
