The philosophy department offers a number of scholarship and award opportunities for students, outside of University-wide scholarships & financial aid.
Paul D. Simmons Ethical Leadership Scholars Program
The Simmons Scholars program is a merit- and need-based scholarship for students in the MA in Applied Philosophy – Health Care Ethics track. It honors Dr. Paul D. Simmons, a founding faculty member of UofL’s Health Care Ethics program, who exemplified the principled, courageous moral leadership the program seeks to cultivate – most notably when he left a previous institution rather than sign a doctrine that violated his ethical convictions.
The scholarship provides direct financial support to offset tuition and educational costs, with no additional obligations attached. It recognizes both academic excellence and the potential to carry forward Paul Simmons’ legacy of ethical leadership, free inquiry and community engagement. Contact the Director of Graduate Studies, Professor Lauren Freeman (lauren.freeman@louisville.edu), for details.
Thomas S. Maloney Scholarship in Philosophy

Deadline: Applications are due March 31 each spring, with awards announced in April. Contact the Department of Philosophy at phil@louisville.edu for details.
