What is Philosophy?
Philosophy is methodical inquiry into the nature, purpose, meaning and value of human life, action and institutions. The UofL Philosophy Department is particularly strong in applied philosophical inquiry, where the tools of philosophy inform — and are informed by — community-engaged research and interdisciplinary collaboration. We are committed to nurturing philosophical inquiry and its associated skills: critically examining beliefs, engaging in constructive dialogues and pursuing the best arguments and evidence wherever they might lead. Our students and alumni engage in philosophy that matters — serving on hospital ethics committees, consulting with governments and organizations and helping communities think more clearly about reaching their goals and living their best lives.
Here, your curiosity about life's fundamental questions becomes the foundation for critical thinking, analytical rigor and sound judgment — skills that empower you to inspire change, shape policy and contribute meaningfully to your community.

Where Deep Thinking Becomes Your Competitive Edge
Philosophy is the original training ground for rigorous analysis, logical argument, ethical reasoning, and clear communication under pressure — exactly the skills that law schools, medical schools, technology companies, consulting firms, and policy organizations consistently rank among their most critical needs. The UofL Philosophy Department's particular strength in applied philosophy means students engage these questions not in the abstract but in direct connection to healthcare, business, technology, and community.
Philosophy majors rank among the highest-scoring of all undergraduate fields on the LSAT — first in the humanities, tied with economics — and consistently perform above average on the GRE and MCAT as well. Employers across sectors are actively seeking graduates who can reason carefully, write precisely, and navigate ethical complexity in a world increasingly shaped by AI, policy challenges, and institutional change. Management analysts — one of the most direct professional pathways for philosophy graduates — are projected to grow 9% through 2034, with roughly 98,100 openings per year.
Whether you're preparing for law school, medical or healthcare ethics, technology and AI policy, consulting, teaching, or graduate study, your Philosophy degree builds the intellectual foundation that makes every other credential stronger.
