What is the ACTFL OPI Exam?

The ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) is an online oral exam for students who are native or near-native speakers of a language other than English. Score Intermediate Low or higher to fulfill your language requirement and earn 12 credit hours.

Who should take this exam?

The ACTFL OPI is designed for students who:

  • Are native speakers of a language other than English
  • Grew up speaking a language other than English at home
  • Want to fulfill the A&S language requirement with their existing language skills

Credit earned: A rating of Intermediate Low or higher earns 12 hours of lower-level language credit (ML 121, ML 122, ML 123), which satisfies the College of Arts & Sciences language requirement.

How to register

    Go to the ACTFL Website

    Visit languagetesting.com and select your language from the list.

    Select Your Exam Purpose

    Click "Get Certified" and choose: "I am a student or teacher and need to take an ACTFL assessment as a requirement for my academic program."

    Enter Your Institution

    In the school/institution search field, type "University of Louisville" exactly as shown. Select it from the dropdown and click Continue.

    Choose Your Test

    Select ACTFL OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) and click "Continue to Schedule."

    Complete Payment

    Create an account or log in, then complete checkout.

    Total cost: $165

    • OPI Exam: $145
    • Web-Based Proctoring (Examity): $20

    Check Your Email

    You'll receive instructions for scheduling your exam after your order is confirmed.

What to Expect

Format: Online oral examination
Results timeline: 5-10 business days
Score reporting: Results are automatically sent to the Department of Classical and Modern Languages - no need to order an official copy (though you can request certification during registration)

When credits post: You'll see credits reflected on your transcript at the end of the semester you took the exam. If credits don't appear within one week after final grades post, contact language@louisville.edu.
