Advanced training in historical methods, theory, research and writing. Choose a major field – Americas, World or Public History – and prepare for PhD study, teaching, public history, cultural heritage work, government or law. In person.

Training for careers in museums, archives, historical interpretation and historic preservation – public history coursework plus an internship at a historical institution. In person.

Why graduate study in History at UofL?

Graduate study here pairs rigorous training in methods and theory with the chance to practice history in public – in a city whose archives, museums and historic sites double as classrooms. The department conducts holistic review of every application: MA applicants apply through the Graduate School with a minimum 3.0 undergraduate GPA and 21 undergraduate credit hours in History (3.0 GPA in those courses), with conditional admission possible. Public History certificate applicants apply through the Graduate School – current MA students submit the department’s internal certificate materials. Qualified UofL undergraduates can start early through the Soaring Scholars accelerated BA/MA.
