In the summer of 2025, the Hite Art Institute launched its inaugural study abroad in Venice, Italy. Twenty-two student artists in varying fields of study, practices, and mediums spent three weeks in the “city of illusions.” They were tasked with observing and photographing Venetian life in a unique light, a light that avoids typical travel photography styles and opts for fresh images of a city known for its iconic imagery. Acknowledging debates concerning the environment, over tourism, and the crumbling walls of an ancient city, Veniceness showcases the individual lens through which twenty-five artists viewed Venice. The exhibition includes photographs, personal journals, pottery, etchings, custom display tables, and sound.

The trip was led by University of Louisville professors, Mary Carothers, Keith Plymale, and Nathan Smith. Veniceness is curated by Critical and Curatorial Studies graduate student, Kathryn Brooks.
