PhD student James Richie publishes in Alchemy: A Journal of Translation
December 4, 2024Two translated excerpts from the poetry collection WIDE SCREEN (2009) by Víctor Cabrera were published in Alchemy: A Journal of Translation. The translations, from Spanish to English, were completed by James Richie. Cabrera is a prolific poet, originally from the Chiapas State of Mexico. WIDE SCREEN is Cabrera’s poetic adaptation of the films of American director Jim Jarmusch. The excerpts published in this issue of Alchemy were from the sections “A Sad and Beautiful World” and “William Blake arriba en la estación violenta” [William Blake Arrives in the Violent Station], and these sections are based on the films Down by Law (1985) and Dead Man (1995). Moreover, in these specific passages Cabrera makes allusions to the poetry of William Blake, Robert Frost, and Octavio Paz. Alchemy is affiliated with the University of California, San Diego.
