Philosophy Alumni Updates and Initiatives

Alumni Network

This year Dr. Mike Schuler ’87 – a steadfast supporter of the Philosophy department and a member of the A&S Dean’s Council – agreed to head up the Philosophy Alumni Network! This group of 12 committed alumni from various eras, walks of life, and parts of the country had a virtual introductory meeting in December, and will be meeting occasionally going forward as well as participating in department events and will be available to serve as mentors and contacts for Philosophy students going forward. If you’re interested in taking on a role with the alumni network or being available as a resource for current students, please be in touch. You can reach us at phil@louisville.edu.

Outstanding Alumni Award

Congratulations to Judge Tanisha Hickerson ’03, who was awarded the 2025 Philosophy Department Outstanding Alumni award for her tenacious work for justice both as a lawyer and, since 2018 (reelected 2022), as Jefferson District Court Judge for the 9th Division. As a lawyer she helped to open the Louisville office of the national law firm Quintairos, Prieto, Wood, & Boyer, and as a judge committed to empathy as well as safety and security, she has focused on helping to reduce jail time and overcrowding. Overall, a judge of and for the people of her community. Upon receiving her award, Judge Hickerson spoke to our current students to emphasize the power of the Philosophy degree to build critical thinking skills and enable a person to excel in whatever they do.

The award event doubled as a networking event, enabling students and alumni to meet and chat about the bridge from college to the career. Thanks to alums Carolann Cockerill, David Snyder, Alexis Ecarma, Hunter Davis, and Grace Nation for attending.

Louisville Philosophy Club

Are you trying to get some more philosophy back in your life? Philosophy Department alum and Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts Steve Skaggs is starting the Louisville Philosophy Club! Gathering on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 5:30 in the Fireplace Room at Molly Malone’s (933 Baxter Ave.), the Philosophy Club will host convivial discussion of perplexing issues over a beer (or tea!). Each month will have a different leader, and short, stimulating readings will be circulated for free in advance of the meeting. No dues, no obligations except mutual respect and openness to others’ ideas. First meeting is July 9th, and the Philosophy Department will cover everyone’s first drink order that evening. Please email Steve Skaggs (sxskag01@louisville.edu) with “Phil Club” in the subject line to RSVP and receive the first reading.

Philosophical Fun & Games

Why not try a Philosophy Wordle! The clue is: "Who remembers what you learned in college?"

Or how about a game of Philosophical Connections
