Engage. Debate. Discover.

The Philosophy Slam brings high school students from across Louisville together for one exciting day of big questions and bold ideas. Every year on World Philosophy Day – the third Thursday in November – we turn abstract philosophical questions into something hands-on, creative and totally unexpected.

What Happens at the Slam

Student teams tackle philosophical questions and present their takes however they want: through skits, debates, performances or something we've never seen before. Drawing from history, literature, science and their own experiences, teams bring these questions to life in ways that surprise us every year.

After each presentation, the real conversation begins. The audience jumps in with questions, pushing ideas further and sparking discussions where everyone learns something new. No one "wins" the Slam in the traditional sense – instead, we celebrate standout moments: the most creative approach, the sharpest argument, the funniest take.

Because philosophy isn't about having the right answer. It's about asking better questions.

Why It Matters

The Philosophy Slam gives students space to wrestle with challenging ideas in a setting that's supportive, not stressful. They learn to present their thinking clearly and defend it confidently. They discover that philosophy isn't confined to dusty textbooks – it's alive, relevant and fun. And they connect with peers and mentors who push them to see things differently.

“The slam isn’t about being right or wrong – it’s about discovering new ways to think, discuss and learn from one another,” – Avery Kolers, Former Chair of the Philosophy Department.
