Explore the Frontiers of Scientific Discovery

Two degrees, five tracks and four minors – each built around hands-on research, modern instrumentation and computational skills.
Physics, BA
Substantial pre-professional preparation for medicine, patent law, teaching, technical writing and technical sales, with general and pre-med tracks and electives toward secondary science teaching certification.
Physics, BS
Preparation for graduate programs in physics, science or engineering – or a technical career – with tracks in applied physics, astronomy and astrophysics, atmospheric physics, and computational physics and data sciences.
Accelerated BS/MS in Physics
Take three graduate courses as an undergraduate that count toward both degrees and finish your Master of Science in Physics sooner. Supported by the Kielkopf graduate tuition scholarship.
Physics Minor
A natural complement to majors in mathematics, mechanical or electrical engineering, and computer science or computer engineering.
Atmospheric Physics Minor
The physics of weather and climate – atmospheric dynamics from the surface to the upper atmosphere – for students headed toward meteorology, environmental science or climate research.
Interdisciplinary Computational Sciences Minor
Scientific computing, simulation and modeling skills that apply across physics, engineering and the natural sciences.
Interdisciplinary Data Sciences Minor
Data analysis, statistics and machine learning grounded in the physical sciences – taught in the department’s TEAL classroom.

Undergraduate Admissions

Admission to a physics major follows the standard University of Louisville process – no portfolio, audition or additional application is required. Transfer students’ transcripts are reviewed by the Director of Undergraduate Studies and the Chair to establish course equivalencies, and the department has no program-specific deadlines.

Student Life & Opportunities

Physics & Astronomy is a small, supportive department where students know their professors and each other. Join the award-winning Society of Physics Students, the astronomy journal club and weekly colloquia; do research with faculty through SROP, MURC and NSF REU programs; collect real data at Moore Observatory; and earn credit for an internship through PHYS 499.
