What is Chemistry?
Chemistry is the science of how matter works, and at the University of Louisville, it's where curiosity becomes the kind of discovery that reshapes medicine, energy and manufacturing. You'll train across biochemistry, analytical, inorganic, organic, physical and materials chemistry, working alongside researchers known internationally for their work in materials manufacturing and computational methods for energy-related challenges. Through hands-on laboratory experience, strong mentorship and cutting-edge research, you'll build the critical thinking, problem-solving and communication skills that today's STEM careers demand.
Discover how a chemistry degree opens doors in healthcare, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, forensics, education and research – and how your work can drive scientific and economic progress in Kentucky and far beyond.

Upcoming Events in Chemistry
During my time at the University of Louisville, I found a home in the chemistry department. While I struggled initially to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, my professors took the time to speak with me about my interests and goals. The caring nature of our faculty cannot be understated, and it is solely because of the support I received that I'm continuing onward with my education and pursuing a PhD in chemistry in this department. I encourage anyone who thinks they might have the slightest interest in chemistry to reach out and get connected; it's one of the best decisions I've ever made.
Career Prospects
A Chemistry degree gives you more than laboratory skills — it gives you the analytical foundation and problem-solving fluency that some of the world's most important industries are built on. From drug discovery and materials innovation to forensic analysis and environmental protection, chemistry sits at the center of fields that are growing and that matter.
Chemistry graduates enter careers across pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medicine, government, manufacturing, energy, education and beyond. Whether your path leads to a research bench, a clinical setting, the classroom or the boardroom, the precision and rigor of a chemistry education prepares you to contribute at the highest level wherever you land.
You'll graduate with hands-on laboratory experience, data analysis skills and a scientific mindset that employers across sectors consistently seek. Where you land comes down to what you specialize in and the kind of impact you want to make. See the directions our graduates have taken, and where chemistry could take you.
