About Us
As old as the College of Arts & Sciences itself, the Department of Mathematics delivers first-rate instruction, research opportunities at every level and a PhD in Applied and Industrial Mathematics.
Explore Comprehensive Programs
Mathematics offers a BA and a BS (with an actuarial science track), minors in mathematics and actuarial mathematics, an accelerated BS/MA option, the MA in Mathematics and the PhD in Applied and Industrial Mathematics. Every path builds the creativity, comprehension, critical thinking, communication and problem-solving skills that carry graduates into teaching, research, industry, government and graduate study.

History & Mission
The Department of Mathematics goes back to the founding of the College of Arts and Sciences. First and foremost, our mission is to deliver first-rate instruction that provides a broad foundation in mathematics and its applications. The department serves the larger university community through its Cardinal Core offerings and aims to deliver a wide variety of mathematics classes and research opportunities to students at every level. Our commitment is for graduates to exhibit mathematical creativity, comprehension, critical thinking, communication and problem-solving skills as they pursue careers in teaching, research, industry, government or post-graduate study.
Our faculty are active in research in mathematics and statistics and their applications to science, engineering and society at large. The PhD program in Applied and Industrial Mathematics, founded in 2002, trains the future researchers and teachers of mathematics and its applications. We strive to offer students ample opportunities to pursue research with faculty and a broad range of mathematics classes consistent with a premier, nationally recognized metropolitan research university.
Who We Serve
The department serves students at every level: Cardinal Core students, natural-science majors taking supporting courses, engineering and business students adding a minor, three undergraduate degree options for mathematics majors, and MA and PhD students in Applied and Industrial Mathematics.

- Mathematics Commons – A commons room reserved for undergraduates – a place for mathematical conversation, relaxation and serendipity, and home to Math Club and Actuarial Club meetings.
Frequently Asked Questions
You need a 2.0 GPA and at least one course beyond calculus. Students bringing AP calculus credit from high school are eligible as soon as they enroll in a math class.
Yes. Several engineering fundamentals courses have counterparts in the math department, and we accept those courses toward the math major and the math minor.
Actuaries are professionals who use mathematics and statistics to quantify risk. They are hired by insurance companies and finance firms, and the profession is consistently ranked among the best for pay and job satisfaction.
The minor requires 21 hours. Engineering and business majors often already require 12–15 hours of mathematics, so they need only two or three additional classes.
