Mathematics With Real Applications

Our faculty are active in research in mathematics and statistics and their applications to science, engineering and society at large – from securing communications and modeling the human pancreas to forecasting weather and advancing pure mathematics. The PhD program in Applied and Industrial Mathematics, founded in 2002, trains the researchers and teachers who carry that work forward, and undergraduates join in through one-on-one research projects with faculty, recognized each year by the Bullitt Best Paper Award.

Research Areas

Five areas of faculty research – each open to graduate and undergraduate collaborators.

Cryptography

The application of mathematics to secure communication, including the design and stress-testing of secure protocols.

Mathematical Biology

Mathematics applied to the biological sciences – from species migration to models of the human pancreas.

Fluid Dynamics

The mathematics of fluids and gases, with applications to weather and climate modeling and viscous fluid flow.

Statistics & Data Science

The design and application of statistical models used across the natural and social sciences and in machine learning.

Pure Mathematics

Advancing mathematical knowledge in algebra, real and complex analysis, function theory and topology.
