Where Logic Becomes Limitless Potential

Two degrees, an actuarial track and two minors – each grounded in rigorous mathematics and the quantitative skills of a data-driven workplace.
Mathematics, BA
A broad yet substantial background in mathematics – algebra, geometry, probability and more – alongside general education. Particularly well-suited for students preparing for secondary certification in mathematics.
Mathematics, BS
Fifty-one hours of mathematics for solid, in-depth knowledge – the degree for careers in analytical and statistical fields or graduate study in a mathematics-related discipline. Includes a track in actuarial science.
Accelerated BS/MA in Mathematics
Take nine hours of graduate coursework as an undergraduate and apply it to both degrees, shortening the path to the MA. Apply through the Soaring Scholars accelerated master’s process.
Mathematics Minor
Twenty-one hours for students in any unit with a background in calculus – especially engineering students in mathematics-intensive areas, who often need only two or three additional classes.
Actuarial Mathematics Minor
Twenty-one hours blending mathematics, probability and finance – suited to business students in economics and finance, or anyone with a calculus background eyeing an actuarial career.

Student Life & Opportunities

Mathematics majors gather in the Mathematics Commons – a room reserved for undergraduates – to study, socialize and meet for Math Club and Actuarial Club, both open to students of any major. Work one-on-one with faculty on research, compete for the Bullitt Best Paper Award, earn elective credit for an internship with a regional business, or join the department’s team in the annual Putnam competition.

Undergraduate Admissions

Admission to the mathematics major requires nothing beyond admission to the university other than a minimum 2.0 college GPA and enrollment in one course beyond first-semester calculus. Transfer requests go through the Office of Adult and Transfer Services; the department evaluates courses based on a syllabus review. Admission deadlines follow the university schedule.
