Why our Graduate Program

Graduate study in biology at UofL is built on mentorship and real research. Our faculty work across the spectrum of biology – disease evolution and pathogenesis, urban and agricultural ecosystems, developmental genetics, animal behavior, plant biology and more – and they all welcome students into their work.

Faculty mentorship

The PhD is built around a close working relationship with a faculty mentor; you’ll secure a faculty member’s agreement to advise you before you’re admitted. This translates into specialized experience; a you arrive with a lab, a project and a scientist already invested in your success.

Research that reaches beyond campus

Biology research happens in labs across Belknap and the Health Sciences Campus, at field sites like the Horner Wildlife Sanctuary and Bernheim Forest, and through partnerships such as the Center for Integrative Environmental Health Sciences. UofL is one of just two Carnegie R1 research universities in Kentucky.

The culminating experience

Master’s students can choose a thesis (an independent research project) or a non-thesis track. PhD students complete extensive original research in a specialized field. Either path you chose, you leave with the independence and skills that careers in academia, industry, government and the health professions reward.
