"There are so many ways the Humanities PhD program influenced my latest novel, both consciously and unconsciously. The internship at the Filson Historical Society provided the spark for the project, but it was my Humanities classes and professors who truly pushed me to think deeply and critically about the issues I wanted to address in my book, everything from the male gaze to our problematic language around sexual assault. I’ve been a creative writer for most of my adult life, but writing a historical novel asked something new of me. I appreciate that the Humanities allows students to marry their creative and scholarly work – without this interdisciplinary approach, I would never have written A Home for Friendless Women."
