Theatre Arts Presents “The Laramie Project,” A Documentary Play Examining the Legacy of Matthew Shepard

The University of Louisville Department of Theatre Arts is proud to present The Laramie Project, the groundbreaking documentary play by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project. 

Created in response to the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, The Laramie Project stands as one of the most significant works of documentary theatre addressing anti-LGBTQ+ violence in the United States. Developed from more than 200 interviews conducted by the theatre company in the months following Shepard’s death, the play gives voice to a wide range of perspectives and explores how a small town—and a nation—grappled with grief, prejudice, and the urgent call for greater understanding and equality. 

More than two decades after its premiere, The Laramie Project remains a vital work in conversations about LGBTQ+ rights, acceptance, and the continuing fight against hate. This production invites audiences to consider how Matthew Shepard’s story shaped national dialogue and to reflect on how communities today can foster greater dignity, safety, and belonging for queer people.
