History & Mission

The Hite Institute of Art + Design, originally established in 1937 and renamed in 2022, offers Kentucky’s most comprehensive art and design programs, including majors in art history, studio art and design. With 22 full-time faculty members, 15 part-time instructors, 8 graduate teaching assistants and a full-time staff of five, the institute serves around 400 students, supported by the Hite Endowment. It fosters education, research and community engagement through scholarships, visiting artists and exhibitions. The institute's mission emphasizes critical thinking and diverse perspectives, contributing to the University of Louisville's goals of creativity and academic excellence.

The Department of Art and Design meets the needs of art history, studio art, graphic design and interior design majors through a diverse curriculum tailored to each field that fosters interdisciplinary collaboration. Students engage in research projects and benefit from workshops and guest lectures by industry professionals. Community outreach initiatives and exhibition opportunities enhance public understanding and provide real-world experience while internships facilitate valuable connections in the industry.
