History & Mission
The Hite Institute of Art + Design, originally established in 1937 and renamed in 2022, offers Kentucky’s most comprehensive art and design programs, including majors in art history, studio art and design. With 22 full-time faculty members, 15 part-time instructors, 8 graduate teaching assistants and a full-time staff of five, the institute serves around 400 students, supported by the Hite Endowment. It fosters education, research and community engagement through scholarships, visiting artists and exhibitions. The institute's mission emphasizes critical thinking and diverse perspectives, contributing to the University of Louisville's goals of creativity and academic excellence.

- Current students looking to major in a program within the Department of Art + Design can apply for the major through ULink. Incoming and transfer students must first gain acceptance to the University before applying for the major (Note: To qualify for admission to the BA program, students must be in Good Standing and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5).
- Please note: All students start in the Bachelor of Arts (BA) program. To pursue a degree in the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program, students must first be admitted to the BA track in Studio Art.
It is recommended students complete the foundation courses within the first two semesters after being accepted as a major. We suggest the following course sequence:
- First Semester: Enroll in ART 105 and ART 107.
- Second Semester: Enroll in ART 106 and a 200-level ART or DES course.
Please note, you should complete at least two 100-level foundation courses before enrolling in a 200-level course. Once you have completed the foundation courses, you may begin enrolling in 300-level studio courses. Take the next step in your academic journey! The Department of Art & Design accepts transfer credits for studio art courses through a portfolio review process. If you are a transfer student with studio art hours, you must submit a portfolio of your previous work, along with all applicable transcripts, for review. This review determines your course placement and the applicability of credits toward your major.

All studio art and design students begin as majors in the BA in Art, track in Studio Art and can apply for the BFA program track after completing the prerequisites.
- BA in Art, track in Studio Art: This program offers a broad experience in studio art, requiring four 300-level studio courses in different media and two 500-level studio courses. It is recommended for students interested in further studies in fields like art education or art therapy.
- BFA in Art, tracks in Studio Art, Graphic or Interior Design: This program is designed for students seeking a pre-professional experience in studio art or design. It is ideal for those planning to pursue graduate studies or take on leadership roles in graphic or interior design. The BFA program involves in-depth study in specific studio or design areas, with students working closely with a faculty mentor.
Yes, the Department offers merit-based scholarships and awards for undergraduate students. Funding is competitive and considers both academic excellence and financial need. Award amounts vary based on the student’s academic record and available funds. The application deadline is February 15 each year.
