A Path to Medicine through the Study of Philosophy

Mikayla Muse always knew her path would ultimately lead to a career in medicine.  

But how she’d get there, what that journey looked like along the way, and determining the destination itself all began with an undergraduate degree in Philosophy. 

“I just took a different route to get to where I am because I've always been passionate about the ethical and relational aspects of medicine,” Muse said.

Neuroscience Major Vaidehi Soni was always drawn to numbers.  

So, when she discovered that UofL offered an Interdisciplinary Data Sciences Minor that included statistics—a subject she loved in high school—she knew she had to add it to her course plan.

UofL Alumnus and Criminal Justice Leader Named U.S. Capitol Police Chief

The University of Louisville’s College of Arts & Sciences is proud to celebrate alumnus Michael G. Sullivan—a graduate of both the Bachelor of Science in Police Administration and the Master of Science in Justice Administration programs in the Department of Criminal Justice—on his appointment as the next Chief of the United States Capitol Police. 

2025 Philosophy Faculty Updates

It’s not only our students who shoot for the stars. This year, along with two colleagues in Sweden, Prof. John Gibson received a second prestigious Templeton award to study the role of art critics in constructing the meaning of works of art. He secured a contract with Oxford University Press for his next book, which will develop this theme. He also received the A&S Distinguished Faculty Award for Service to the Profession, and was recognized by the Humanities PhD students with the Annette Allen Mentorship Award. 2025 Philosophy Student Research Updates

It was a banner year for student research in the Philosophy Department. Our majors won two of the three “best thesis” awards! Megan Crowley received the Best Thesis in Humanities award for her study of the social epistemology of misinformation; Allan Bagley won Best Thesis in the Natural Sciences for his research in the theory of games. Two Philosophy majors – Kathleen Clarke ’26 and Kaitlin Renaud ’26 – presented their research at the 22nd Annual Steven Humphrey Undergraduate Philosophy Colloquium.
