Dr. Kaila Story’s life and work as a Black lesbian, feminist, and queer theorist have placed her in a paradox—receiving intense scrutiny and hyper-visibility from others, while simultaneously and very personally experiencing erasure within LGBTQIA+ spaces. 

General Studies Graduate Inspired by Grandchildren to Accomplish Goals

When Tempy Douglas walked across the stage in December 2024 to receive her General Studies degree from the University of Louisville, it was the culmination of a journey that had begun nearly five decades earlier.   

As a grandmother, a former educator, and a recovering addict, Douglas returned to UofL with a singular purpose: to prove to herself and to her family that it was never too late to achieve a dream.

Each March, National Criminal Justice Month (NCJM) offers students across the country the chance to learn more about the workings and careers of the justice system.  

The Department of Criminal Justice this year brought the theme, “Cops, Courts, and Community” to life through a series of on-campus events designed to give students real-world insight and practical experience.

Many residents of Southern Indiana and Kentucky remember March 2nd, 2012 for a widespread tornado outbreak that included an EF4 tornado that devastated the town of Henryville, Indiana. For UofL senior Dominic LaDuke, that tornado made a particularly lasting impact. 

Hayley Salo Receives Writing Awards

HAYLEY SALO received the Maddox Award and the June Jordan Award, both in the doctoral student category, for essays submitted through the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality department. The essays are excerpts of her dissertation about nineteenth century embroidery samplers. The first one explores how women used embroidery in psychiatric asylums to support or dismantle relationships with other women, with a focus on the work of Mary Frances Heaton and Lorina Bulwer.

Erica Lewis Makes Their Mark with Professional Development

ERICA LEWIS was selected to receive the Graduate Dean’s Professional Development Supplement by the Graduate School. Erica has also been invited to participate in Future / Past / Presence, a printmaking portfolio exchange and exhibition at the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art in honor of its 50th Anniversary and 40 years partnering with the University of Southern Indiana. Organized by John Begley and Brett Anderson, the exhibition will run from mid-April to mid-May.

Erica Lewis Leads CeLOUbrate Print 2025

In their preparations for CeLOUbrate Print 2025, Erica Lewis has been volunteering to lead free woodcut workshops around the city. In early March, they gave a short lecture during their Crane House workshop, talking about different historical relief printing techniques in Asia in order to historically contextualize their creative activity.

Ashley Bittner Receives GTA Excellence in Teaching Award

ASHLEY BITTNER was chosen as the 2025 recipient of the Graduate School’s “GTA Excellence in Teaching Award” and was a finalist for the A&S award as well. Ash also received the Summer 2025 Dissertation Completion Award from the Graduate School in support of his final semester in the Comparative Humanities PhD program.

Jai’Michael Anderson’s work towards achieving his goal of becoming a multimedia journalist will be featured this April 17 at the Communication Department’s Film Showcase, where a piece he created around last year’s Kentucky Derby will be presented.
