Rebekah Flowers amplifies her great-grandmother's voice with audio recordings in an art installation depicting a historical plantation living room, challenging how narratives about slavery are presented to spark change-making conversations for the future.

Humanities PhD student Rasheed Ismaila to present at National Council for Black Studies conference

Rasheed Adedoyin Ismaila's abstract submission titled, "Double Unconsciousness: Dilating the Soul of Black Immigrants in the US," has been accepted for presentation at the 49th Annual Conference of the National Council for Black Studies, which is slated from March 19-22, 2025, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Also, his submission, “African and African American Characters in African American and African Plays: A Critical Discourse on Cultural Tension,” has been accepted for presentation at the 2025 Louisville Conference on Literature and Culture.

Andrea Miles Defends Dissertation, “Black Rebels”

My name is Andrea Miles, and I am thrilled to embark on the next phase following my exciting journey to earn my PhD. My dissertation, “Black Rebels” African American Revolutionaries from North Carolina During and After the American War for Independence,” examines the factors that motivated free men of color to overwhelmingly join American Revolutionaries, who sought to preserve slavery instead of British forces who offered freedom to the slaves.

Catalogs in Cyan: An Ode to their Keepers is the product of a collaboration between fiber artist Sarah Jane Castellon, printmaker Erica Lewis (EVPL), and the students in their respective classes: ART 381: Introduction to Fiber Art & Mixed Media and HUM 151: Creativity & the Arts---the former of which features our department's very own Meg Kennedy. The artwork was installed in the UofL Art Library at the end of this semester and will feature a reception on 1/23/25 from 4:00-6:00.
