As the spring semester unfolds, students may find themselves seeking motivation, exploring new opportunities, and looking for ways to make the most of their college experience. Dayna Touron, Ph.D., who joined UofL in July 2023 as Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, is passionate about helping students succeed both in and out of the classroom.

When Jamaia Daugherty came to UofL as a freshman in 2015 from Winchester, KY, she initially felt lost in a large university setting in a new, big city. 

Homesick and unsure of what to do next, she was able to build a new sense of community through the peer mentoring program CONECT (Caring of New Students Experiencing College Transition), which allowed her to focus on her education and career goals. Today, she is a teacher at Grace James Academy of Excellence. 

Kentucky Honors Roundtable Gives Students Opportunities to Present Research and Creative Works at UofL

UofL’s Honors Program hosted the Kentucky Honors Roundtable (KHR) events earlier this month with over 150 students from 10 colleges and universities from across the commonwealth engaging in presentations, panel discussions, and networking opportunities. 

Held twice per year and rotating to different locations each fall and spring, UofL hosts the KHR every five years. 

PhD student James Richie publishes in Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, and Culture

James Richie’s article “Representations Translation and Migration, Utopia and Dystopia: Representations of the Labor of Cultural Mediation in Fictional Eastern Europe and the Real US-Mexico Border” was accepted for publication in the Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, and Culture (a peer-reviewed journal edited by the graduate students of Department of World Languages at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville). This article started as James’s term paper for the course Humanities 682 (Translation and Migration) taught by Dr. Simona Bertacco. 

PhD student Steve Muir to present at two upcoming conferences

Steve Muir will be presenting at the conference for the Applied Practical & Professional Ethics Association (APPE) with his partner and collaborator, bri mae magsarili in February, where they will be giving a paper called "Bioethics in Street Medicine: Insurrectionary Care". Steve will also be presenting solo at WGS South's 50th anniversary conference in March, giving a paper called "The Political Claims of Queer Spatial and Temporal Narrative".

University of Louisville’s African American Theatre Program presents ‘Clyde’s’

Humphrey Colloquium Provides National Philosophy Conference Experience for Undergraduate Students

Philosophy students from across North America will come together at UofL on Friday, Feb. 28 for the 22nd annual Steven Humphrey Undergraduate Philosophy Colloquium, a prestigious conference where young philosophers explore modern issues and philosophical questions both new and old. 

Groundbreaking Salamander Climate Study Happening at Horner Sanctuary

Salamanders at Horner Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary are playing a critical role in research that will help scientists to better understand a wide range of climate impacts that could have broad implications for the future.  

The untouched nature of the land at Horner is key to the success of this research.

Graphic Design Student Makes Career Strides with Two Agency Internships

Graphic design student James Jean-Marie had the opportunity to create and present a full branding package for a hotel as one of three agency-developed creative options for the client to review. 

The hotel chose his designs – as an intern – giving him a win for his resume and the satisfaction of knowing it was a job well done. 

“That was exhilarating,” he said.
